Incorporated: 1722

Origin: Nottingham was named in honor of Daniel Finch, second Earl of Nottingham. The Earl was a close friend of Samuel Shute and Joseph Dudley, Governors of Massachusetts when New Hampshire was under that province's jurisdiction. Among the grantees was Peregrine White, descendant of Peregrine White of the Mayflower, the first child of English parentage born in New England.

Population Trends: Nottingham's population grew very quickly, increasing above the statewide average rate over the last four decades. Decennial growth rates ranged from a ten percent increase between 1950-1960 to a 105 percent increase between 1970-1980. Over fifty years, Nottingham's population increased by 3,135 residents, going from 566 residents in 1950 to 3,701 residents in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Nottingham was 4,169 residents, which ranked 89th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
