Incorporated: 1759

Origin: First granted in 1728, the town was known as Lovewell's Town, in honor of Captain John Lovewell, who built the stockade fort at Ossipee. Shortly afterward, the town took the name Suncook, the Indian name of the river flowing through the area. When the town was incorporated in 1759, it was given the name Pembroke in honor of Henry Herbert, ninth Earl of Pembroke in southern Wales.

Population Trends: Population in Pembroke grew slightly below the statewide average over the last fifty years. Decennial growth rates ranged from a five percent increase between 1990-2000 to a 35 percent increase between 1980-1990. Over the last five decades, Pembroke's population increased by a total of 3,803 residents, going from 3,094 residents in 1950 to 6,897 residents in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Pembroke was 7,260 residents, which ranked 42nd among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.

Population Density, 2004: 320.8 persons per square mile of land area. Pembroke contains 22.6 square miles of land area and 0.2 square miles of inland water area.
